Sir Celestine Ngozichim Omehia, born 15th September, 1959 at Ubima in present day Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State in Nigeria is an alumni of University of Hull, England where he bagged a Masters Degree in International Law.
As a politician, he held various positions as Commissioner of Education, to being a Special Assistant, Senior Special Assistant and Executive Assistant to the Governor of Rivers State at different times.
On 14th of April 2007, he contested and won overwhelmingly for the position of governor of Rivers State on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party. Consequently, on May 29th 2007, he was sworn on as the 3rd democratically elected governor of the new Rivers State following a landslide victory at the polls.
While he was in office as the executive governor of Rivers State, Nigeria, he pioneered the ‘Carrot and Stick Model’ on Amnesty and rehabilitation of repentant militants in Rivers State. The successes achieved as a result of his pioneering approach to the Niger Delta Militants conflict, led to the adoption and expansion of the same approach to conflict resolution by the federal government of Nigeria for the entire Niger-Delta region.
For this same reason, on 21st November, 2007, the United Nation Industrial Development Organisation honoured him with an Ambassador of Peace Award .Our recipient has not only excelled as a man of peace using his position in public office, but has also established himself as an author of note with no fewer than six books to his credit; of which the most recent, “Dismissal In Nigeria Labour Law” and “A Right to be Wrong” earned the prestigious US based Kirkus endorsement. In view of his numerous achievements we awarded him the African Achievers Award for excellence in Public Office.
